A Day at Compass Playgroup

Compass Playgroup is located in the Dean Park Pre-School Center, sharing the space with Dean Park Nursery. We have our own dedicated bright, spacious room, cloakroom, and outdoor play area. Sharing the building with Dean Park Nursery offers access to various facilities, and helps with the transition for children moving from playgroup to nursery.

Our secure, gated outdoor play area features trikes, scooters, an activity train, a playhouse, slide, sand pit, and a popular mud kitchen (overalls and wellies provided). We aim to get children outside daily, and on warmer days we have snacks, story and song time outside.

A typical day at Playgroup -

08.30 Parents and children arrive. Parents will hang up the children’s outdoor                    clothing and say goodbye.

09.10 Supervised free play – children can choose their own activity (messy/creative            play, construction, jigsaws/puzzles, role play, books, small world play)

10.20 Tidy up time – everyone gets involved

10.30 Snack time! All the children wash their hands and sit together to enjoy a                  healthy snack

10.50  Active play – active play inside or outside

11.30  Group time – the children will come together to sing songs, play musical                  instruments or listen to a story

11.40  End of the morning session and it's home time for the children. For those                staying on, it's 'Lunch Club' time

Afternoons After lunch we might take the older children on outings in the local                    community, nature walks or trips to the play park.

Information for Parents

  1. Compass starts at 8.30am, for those attending for a morning session only pick up is at 11.40am and for those attending a full day session pick up is at 3.00pm
  2. Each child will need a named bag which can stay at playgroup, containing the following:
    • a change of clothes (more than one is helpful if potty training)
    • nappies, wipes and nappy cream (if required)
    • dummy (if required)
    • sun cream
  3. If your child is staying for a full day, requires a nap and needs a comforter/toy to allow them to sleep, then please place this in a named plastic bag and hand it to a staff member at drop off. This will be returned at the end of each day. Please discuss with a staff member the maximum time your child is required to sleep.
  4. Please send your child appropriately dressed for the weather as we spend a lot of time outdoors. Please remember sun hats, rain gear, hats, gloves etc. An obvious but very important request - please name everything!
  5. For children attending a full day session, your child will need a packed lunch in a named lunch bag/box as well as a named water bottle. Please hand these to a member of staff on arrival. These will be stored in the fridge at playgroup, which is cleaned every day. No nuts (including nutella and peanut butter) are allowed in packed lunches, and grapes must be cut in half please.
  6. A snack will be provided for all children during the morning and afternoon. Please ensure any food allergies have been advised on the forms provided.
  7. Settling in: We have historically found that almost every child settles really fast when staff take children straight into the playroom in the morning. We appreciate this can be a nervous time for families, however we all want what is best for your child, so please feel free to discuss any concerns you may have with the playroom staff at any time. If your child has any specific additional needs/requirements, then please make sure we are aware of these so we can provide as much support as possible.
